Physical Education

Our Three Big Ideas for teaching PE are: Activity, Collaboration and Challenge

Intent

Our intention is for our PE curriculum to develop a wide range of key skills including problem solving, communication, cooperation, perseverance, respect and leadership. This allows for personal development, including confidence, self-motivation and resilience. Pupils learn the importance of fitness for physical development, mobility, balance and team work. We want our pupils to understand the health benefits of being physically active, alongside gaining knowledge of the rules, skills and tactical knowledge of a range of games. We also plan to support our pupils to develop coordination through dance and gymnastics alongside ball games and athletics.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is taught by teachers and specialist sports providers and gives pupils opportunities to develop skills applied across a range of sports. Pupils are taught choreography, balance, control, fluency as well as hand-eye coordination, striking and fielding and dribbling with a ball. choices. They are given opportunities to work independently and collaboratively in team games, dance, gymnastics, track and field events. Opportunities are also provided for pupils to reflect and evaluate their own and others' performances in a supportive, empathic, positive and effective manner towards reaching their own goals for improvement.

Impact

We want all our pupils to enjoy and achieve in PE.  By the time they leave primary school our pupils should have the knowledge, skills and ability to be able to engage in all aspects of PE enabling them to perform, participate, contribute and lead. Pupils should gain an appreciation that PE is more than playing a sport, it requires the nurturing, practice and acquisition of necessary skills to achieve individual potential. All learners, at all levels are challenged , they are continually developing and improving.

Being physically active, participating in PE lessons and school sport is very important at Wetheringsett. Our Christian vision that from the smallest of all seeds come the tallest of trees, impacts on our PE in school. We feel that even as a small school we can participate in festivals and tournaments and often do well despite our few numbers. Our pupils have more opportunities to represent the school and in certain sports have the opportunity to do really well. We participate in the schools sports mark despite our small size.

VISION

It is our vision for PE at Wetheringsett that all children will leave having enjoyed a broad range of sports and physical activity. They will have gained the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate with enthusiasm, competence and independence.

We will teach safe, supportive and effective PE lessons, provide a range of relevant extra – curricular sports clubs and enable as many children to participate in school sporting competitions or performances whilst at the school.

PE and Sport will also contribute to developing the pupils’ social, emotional and intellectual skills: such as communication, teamwork, resilience, fair play, leadership and problem-solving as-well as knowledge and understanding of how being active is related to being fit and healthy. Participation in PE activities, showing determination, achieving success and ‘personal bests’, will be celebrated. This will promote the children’s self-esteem, highlight the positive impact on health and well-being and promote a desire to continue to develop their skills.

All the above, will lead to the children being able to continue to participate in sporting and physical activity and so make healthy choices, for the rest of their lives.
