Computing

Intent

Our computing curriculum is designed to equip children with the tools to go out into the wider world; our goal for computing education is that children are able to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world, through the three ‘big ideas’:

∙ Coding – understanding logical thinking and using it to create algorithms and programs

∙ Communication – knowing how to use information and communication technology to express and present ideas effectively

∙ E-Safety – knowing how to use technology responsibly and knowing how to stay safe online.

Implementation

Computing is taught through ‘Teach Computing’ and in mixed year groups; KS1, LKS2 and UKS2. Over a 2-Year cycle, the children are taught 12 different topics. These topics cover computing systems and networks, creating media, programming and data and information. Our vision is for every child in our school to have a world-leading computing education and to be given opportunities to compete with other pupils using the new skills that they have acquired.

The Teach computing scheme of work is in line with the National Curriculum and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics and throughout each teaching group. Where possible, these topics are linked to learning across other subjects to ensure that our computing topic includes purpose while teaching pupils new skills.

Impact

Learning in computing will be enjoyable and purposeful across the whole school. Teachers will have high expectations and quality evidence will be presented in a variety of forms. By the end of their time at Wetheringsett, children will use digital and technological vocabulary accurately, alongside a progression in their technical skills. They will be confident in using a range of hardware and software and will produce high-quality purposeful products. Children will see the digital world as part of their world, extending beyond school, and understand that they have choices to make. Our pupils will feel prepared to compete in the technological real-world. They will be confident and respectful digital citizens going on to lead happy and healthy digital lives.
